I am a designer for a leading manufacture of corded and cordless phones in the market. We understand the home telephones market is shirking year on year by 15%. We assume eventually it will just die ie betamax. Our department try's always to innovate into related markets like baby monitor and home security ect but essentially these are just reskins. Also these markets are already saturated and mature.

1.My question is this: if a company fears to innovate because of the reason that there is "increased cost and too much risk" how can it innovate or remain profitable in a shrinking or mature market.

2.What factors are preventing innovation?3. I know what you might think - it remains profitable by capturing market share but once that is done and it owns the whole market what then?

Re: 10,000 Reasons Not to Get a Patent on Your Invention: What Patent Attorneys Don’t Want You to Know

You got it! I'm a marketer and work primarily online now after 25 years on Madison Avenue (many places, many gigs, many clients) and I love that the one thing that I ask folks is "what is the primary rule of marketing?" and they all say "sell sell sell" or some other crap.
I say to them NO! "DON"T SELL WHAT PEOPLE AREN"T BUYING!!"

Plus, the best ideas are often 2+ 2 together. Not reinventing the wheel. I used to know the guy that invented the LEGGS egg, remember that? I didn't get the story first hand from him, but legend had it around the Agency that he was having a fight with a client and he said "why don't you put the darn thing in an egg and call it the leggs egg!

And why, oh why, did it take them 20 years to make a double stuff oreo?
"We need a new product idea (imagine suits and creatives around a conference table) big white pad on an easel and magic markers. Now let's BRAINSTORM.. "

And some intern who is sheepishly sitting in the back says "er ah you could make the filling double?" Then he gets fired because he made his boss look stupid.

And FINALLY! Why did it take them 20 years to make Kentucky Fried Chicken POPems! They probably had focus groups and spent millions in market research to figure out that NOBODY WANTS THE MEAT< WE JUST WANT THE SKIN AND THE COATING!!

Even South Park did the episode where Cartman eats all of the skin off.

And don't get me started on the remake of Rollerball. Sacrilege!

Re: Inventor Friendly Companies

Absoulutely! He has a podcast available where he talks about some of the key concepts in the book. I will dig it out and post the link.

I am currently reading "Anything You Want” Derek Sivers, which is on your list which is great so far. I love that his approach is all about creating a business that's first priority is helping people. I have" 4 Hour Body" too, but have only skimmed a chapter at the moment.

Re: Inventor Friendly Companies

Stephen, a may do one further and get directly in-touch with you?(in a week) As long as that is OK on Your End?
